How the Settlement Process Works

Many policyholders are unaware that a life insurance policy may have value beyond the insurance company’s surrender option. Through a life settlement, eligible policyholders may be able to sell their life insurance policy to a licensed buyer in exchange for a lump-sum cash payment.

Understanding the life settlement process can help individuals determine whether exploring a settlement may be the right option.

Step 1: Policy Review

The process begins with a confidential review of the life insurance policy.

Basic information is typically evaluated, including:

• Policy type

• Death benefit amount

• Premium costs

• Age and health of the insured

This initial review helps determine whether the policy may qualify for settlement consideration.

Step 2: Medical Record Authorization

If the policy appears eligible, the policyholder may be asked to provide authorization for medical records to be reviewed. These records are used by licensed settlement providers to estimate life expectancy and evaluate the policy.

Medical information is handled with strict confidentiality.

Step 3: Market Evaluation

The policy may then be presented to licensed settlement providers and institutional buyers who evaluate the policy and determine potential offers.

Because the secondary market includes multiple buyers, the policy may receive competitive consideration.

Step 4: Offer Review

If settlement offers are received, the policyholder has the opportunity to review the offers and decide whether to proceed with the transaction.

There is no obligation to accept an offer.

Step 5: Closing and Payment

Once an offer is accepted and closing documents are completed:

• Ownership of the policy transfers to the buyer

• The buyer assumes future premium payments

• The policyholder receives the agreed-upon settlement payment

Settlement funds are typically released within a few business days after the transfer is confirmed by the insurance carrier.

Understanding Your Options

For policyholders who no longer need or cannot maintain their life insurance policy, a life settlement may provide an opportunity to unlock financial value from an existing asset.
